Embattled Labour MP Louisa Wall has deleted incorrect claims about gender identity and international law from her Facebook page.

Ms Wall wrote on her Facebook page yesterday, “I stand by my comments that TERFs, or any group that proclaims trans women are not
women and should not be able to self identify and therefore change details on their birth certificates via statutory declaration are fundamentally discriminating against the human rights of trans women”.

To support her claims, Ms Wall referenced the 2010 “Recommendation no. 28” under Article 2 of the 1979 Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). However, in international law, including CEDAW, the word “woman” refers to biological sex, not gender identity. The two concepts are quite distinct.

Georgina Blackmore of Speak Up For Women, a grassroots feminist campaign group formed to opposed sex self-ID in NZ, said “this is a gross misrepresentation of international law. The statement ‘trans women are women’ is a political campaign slogan, not a statement of legal fact. Louisa’s comments, which she repeated on national radio, are misleading the New Zealand public on points of law”

“It is concerning that a Member of Parliament can make such obviously false and misleading statements about the law. Labeling critics of the BDMRR Bill as “TERFs” who are engaged in “discrimination” against trans people is inaccurate, emotive and inflammatory. It is designed to demonise and silence critics. It is ultimately unhelpful to those on both sides of the debate”, said Ms Blackmore.

“We call on Labour and Ms Wall to acknowledge that her comments were incorrect and to publicly retract and apologise for them.”

  1. There’s no need to apologise.

  2. The most pertinent words in her post are in the last sentence: “…in my opinion”. Not gospel, not law, not a consensus view but just her opinion on one side of a robust discussion. She has a platform as an MP. Gives her opinion undue weight.

  3. There is no fundamental human right to force others to see you as you see yourself. Neither should there be.

  4. This is wrong in so many ways.
Nowhere in history can you erase your past. Eg dead naming
We all have a past we have to live with.
Women’s Sports is being overtaken by men.
Safe spaces for women and children will be eliminated. Eg refuge, sports, changing rooms.
Safe spaces for vulnerable women will be taken away. Hospitals, and jails, shelters and boarding houses.
I want to self ID as a cancer specialist, I should be allowed to do so. Ridiculous to say the least.
Trans do not get special rights by dissing women’s rights.
    This is madness
    Misogyny in drag
    Emperors new clothes
